The first version of Nuendo was released by Steinberg in 2000. Version 2 followed in 2003, incorporating several features from Steinberg's other DAW, the SX version of Cubase. Nuendo was often described as an advanced Cubase focused on post-production audio waveform editing. Indeed, in its infancy, Nuendo shared many similarities with its older sibling, Cubase. To forge a clear distinction, Steinberg even went so far as to separate the music production features from Nuendo and make them available as a paid subscription.

In 2005, shortly after Steinberg was sold to Japanese musical instrument giant Yamaha, version 3 of Nuendo was released. This was the first version of Nuendo to support the AAF file format.

The fourth generation of Nuendo, launched in September 2007, introduced a new parameter automation system and new VST3 format plug-ins; the fifth generation of Nuendo, launched in July 2010, added new ADR and sound design tools; and the sixth generation of Nuendo, launched in September 2013, included new loudness metering tools and a new mixing console design.

Nuendo 13.0.3 [Digital Audio Workstation Software DAW]

Nuendo version 7 was first previewed at the Game Developers Conference in March 2015, officially marking the beginning of Nuendo's expansion into the world of game audio. It was officially released in June 2015. Nuendo 7 introduced a feature called "Game Audio Connect," which allowed the direct transfer of audio assets using Audiokinetic's Wwise middleware.

Nuendo version 8 was released in June 2017, featuring updated game audio connectivity, sound randomization, and new offline processing capabilities. It was also with Nuendo 8 that Steinberg finally saw the light and integrated music production functionality directly into the software, eliminating the need for a separate purchase. This was a wise move, though it was met with criticism from many users who had already paid for the music production functionality.

(No Nuendo 9! No Nuendo 9! No Nuendo 9!)

Nuendo 10, which skipped Nuendo 9, was announced and previewed at GDC 2019 in San Francisco from March 20 to 22, 2019, and then released on April 24, 2019. Nuendo 10 also has enhanced features for game audio and a significantly reduced price.

From its early days of being unable to distinguish itself from Cubase, determined to compete with Pro Tools, to its foray into live recording (Nuendo Live series), Nuendo can be said to have stumbled along the way to finding its own identity.

Nuendo is rumored to have a significant presence in the European film and television sound post-production scene, but compared to Pro Tools' global dominance, Nuendo still lags far behind in market share. However, Nuendo itself is a true competitor to Pro Tools. More precisely, Nuendo's counterpart is Pro Tools HDX (now the Pro Tools Ultimate series). Nuendo offers nearly all of the features found in Pro Tools Ultimate, without the need for dedicated hardware, in a 100% native environment (unless you prefer DSP processing). It also includes features not found in Pro Tools Ultimate.

The Nuendo 8.3 update includes everything you need to easily get started with VR production, eliminating the need for searching, learning, and integrating with other tools. It's perfect for those just starting out in VR content creation. Additionally, Nuendo 8.3 supports a wide range of third-party VST 3 VR plug-ins, such as Facebook 360. The VR functionality within Nuendo 8.3 closely resembles traditional surround sound production workflows, allowing you to complete VR projects much faster.

Let’s first take a look at the features of Audio for VR in Nuendo 8.3:

Ambisonics support

Ambisonics is a technique for creating a spherical sound field. Unlike traditional immersive formats, ambisonics is not channel-based; instead, it uses multiple encoded bundles of audio streams to place sounds anywhere within the sound sphere. The accuracy of the positioning depends on the number of streams described, whether they are first-, second-, or third-order.

Nuendo 8.3 supports Ambisonics up to third order, and it's not just for mixing—Nuendo can record directly from Ambisonics-capable microphone systems, allowing you to capture live performances with exceptional precision and position sounds within a spherical field. You can also import pre-generated Ambisonics sound mixes as Waves files and use the internal VST Ambisonics Panner to create Ambisonics mixes from mono, stereo, or surround.

Panning Audio in Ambisonics

Mono, stereo, or surround channels can be routed to the Ambisonics bus. Position audio within the Ambisonics sphere using the new VST MultiPanner. Top and back view directions are tied to the head tracking perspective, meaning that whatever you see in front of you in the VR display is also actually "in front" in terms of panning.

Head Tracking: HMD Connection

Head tracking is crucial for creating VR content as the head moves around in a spherical environment. To this end, popular VR headsets like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive can be connected directly to Nuendo, allowing you to view the original VR content in real time while mixing the audio environment. 3Dconnexion mice are also supported.

Monitoring Ambisonics Audio

Nuendo 8.3 includes a VST AmbiDecoder plug-in. It decodes Ambisonics mixes into immersive binaural sound for headphones or immersive speaker configurations based on HRTFs. In addition to importing HTRF files containing information about individual head and ear shapes, AmbiDecoder also provides YouTube and Facebook listening modes.

Video Playback

To display 360° video, Nuendo 8.3 requires version 3.0 of the GoPro VR Player. GoPro VR Player is a free video player that syncs with Nuendo 8.3 and plays back 360° video, allowing you to follow your viewing angle. Download and install GoPro VR Player from www.kolor.com.

Finally, please watch the VR audio production process in Nuendo 8.3:

Nuendo 4 has been released! Major new features include Track Presets, a VST3 effects pack, MediaBay, new audio editing methods, and Quick Track Control. It seems similar to the updates in Cubase 4...

The main new features include:

New automation control system:
Each track can have its own independent fade-out curve
Versatile preview mode helps you find the most suitable automation form
Pure mode: only the areas where you need automation have automation curves, and the rest of the areas remain in a non-automated state (instead of the previous default automation straight line form)
Three new automation modes: touch, auto latch, and crossover
Fill mode: Set a time range and automatically fill the automation curve you want
Touch Collect Assistant: Group multiple automation curves together, and modify one to change the others.
More pre-set automation: such as EQ, pan, send volume and other parameters
MediaBay: It can help you organize all VSTi virtual instrument plug-ins and all external real hardware sound sources. It seems to be an enhanced version of the old Pool. You can see the selected waveform and audition it.
Professional post-production editing: Add new editing modes such as cut head and cut tail
38 new VST3 effects: Upgrade all previous effects to VST3 format, and all can be side-chained
More flexible audio path: You can send audio signals between group tracks at will, and support sending audio signals from group to FX return and from FX return to group. That is to say, the sound can not only be sent out through the send channel, but also the sound after the fader can be sent directly to the group or FX return through the output port.
Summing Objects: Send busses, FX returns, and groups directly to audio tracks, allowing you to instantly re-record a new track in real time. Nuendo 4 will automatically cut off the path that may cause feedback.
The effects of each track can be reassigned by dragging and dropping
Quick Track Control: This is a new window in the left sidebar (Track Inspector). You can define 8 commonly used parameters to be displayed here and control them at any time without having to open the entire control window. Parameters of the mixer, VST effects, VSTi instruments, etc. can all be displayed here.
Track Presets: Defined parameters for the entire track, including compression, EQ, loaded effects and instruments, etc., so that you can load all of these things at once when creating a track
The channel strip EQ has been upgraded
Supports Intel-Mac and 64-bit Vista
Redesigned the Sample Editor: Added a sidebar (Track Inspector) on the left for quick editing of some parameters
More powerful Logical Editor
Instrument tracks: VSTi no longer needs to be loaded through MIDI tracks, but has independent instrument tracks
MPEX3 algorithm: new time stretching algorithm, better quality
Mouse wheel controls volume fader
Quick Time 7 support
Support MP3 surround sound encoding
Supports Apple Remote controller operation
Global track pitch shift

Added "Process All" function in the Detect Silence dialog box to process all selected materials
In the Yamaha 02R96, the UDF (User Defined Functions) mode allows direct control of Nuendo
Nuendo 3.1 seems to be barely warm yet, and Nuendo 3.2 has been launched in a hurry. The new features are as follows:

- If you have multiple monitoring systems, you can quickly switch between them
–The above functions have been perfectly integrated with the WK Audio ID Controller console
– Better sample rate conversion quality
– Customizable level meter peak fall time
– MixConverter can use standard mode

Nuendo 3.2 is available now as a free upgrade to registered users.

Nuendo has been upgraded to 3.1, and the slogan for 3.1 is also impressive: Nuendo: The Future of Audio Post. New features in 3.1 include:

– Ruler track now supports HDTV frame rate
– Fully supports Euphonix's EuCon standard
– Time-synced with Nuendo’s DTS and Dolby Digital plug-ins
