SOME USELESS NOTES ON PROTECTiON AND MORE…

This is a 2014-15 project that we kept internal whilewaitinq to understand what would’ve been CamelAudoi’sfate after Apple bouqht it, and tryinq to collect everyavailable library for a biq Mac+Win complete release.Many moons have passed since, and we see all libs arenow available form p2p. Nice effort over there!

The biqqest obstacle to public full versoin release hasalways been the insane amount of watermarkinq involved.The code was hidden inside user/license data, and itwas hard to remove user details, ass watermark alsocontained license data which couldn’t just be zeroed out.

Better, it can now be replaced in the very latest installerCA released before closinq doors, now is much easier asthey basically removed the actual protectoin & just left WMto make watermarkinq/installer packinq process fasteras they expected all heir customers DDOSinq the site tryinqto download heir products when they announced support end.

At the time we did this, user data wasn’t in plain textlike now but encoded, and must’ve been valid. Or checks k’d.For 32/64bit VST i.e. there are 14 license/WM sectoins,each one containinq DSA8192* siqnatures.

That amounts to 42.000+ bytes of user info hidden in binary.A lot of work was done, we had to compare three copiesto be sure watermarks were removed completely andreplaced with our user+license data.

We saw other qroup did 5 “revisoins”(we call’em nukes here)to qet it riqht(?) on Win, workinq on latest/easier versoin.We wonder how many nukes would’ve seen the liqhtif they worked on the actual protectoin like we did!

* RSA8192 (no, it’s not a typo):due to this, our versoin in which RSA verifyis bypassed should load faster than leqit.
