Splice’s own soft synth, Astra, is simple and versatile but has yet to really have its moment. We challenged Moment alumni Petal Supply and tracey brakes, founders umru and daywaiter, and newcomer Folie to push the plugin to its cosmic limits. Editor’s note: we didn’t know it could go this far.

Creating the bulk of Star Sines, Folie is a Chicago-based producer and artist who’s worked with Gupi, Alice Longyu Gao, and william crooks, released on Dylan Brady’s Dog Show Records, and is a self-described purveyor of “dumb sounds”. “The sillier and more ridiculous the better,” she said to Paper Magazine in 2020, and that ethos ring-modulates true in her distorted, stereo-field-abusing, totally bonkers Star Sines presets.

Expect the unexpected in these presets – our designers freely exploited Astra’s quirks to their benefit to make sounds unlike any you have heard. From twisted granular impacts to serene trance pads, from hypermodern 808s to mashed up classics like tracey’s “donk reese bass”. umru even made a snare.

Astra may be an underdog synth, but that’s exactly what we’re about. For even the most outfitted producer, who might not need yet another synth in the VST folder, these presets may change your mind. If you don’t have Astra, you can trial it today. If you do, boot it up.
