Crocus Soundware is pleased to present LIMINAL: ZEPHYRIAN BRASS, a library of intimately recorded Trumpet, Trombone and Valve Trombone samples – playable using the full version of Kontakt 6.8+. The library’s articulations are aleatoric, long and evolving, with the performer imparting character and movement into each sample. This library focuses on capturing a wide dynamic range of the instruments, highlighting the uniquely varied timbres hidden within those dynamics. Notably, so-called ‘whisper tones’ were recorded – a difficult technique where the performer uses highly-controlled breaths to produce tone that barely activates the instrument’s resonance. The result is a fragile sound that teeters between breath and pitch. This technique evokes a warm and airy reed-like character from the instrument.

The audio was recorded using large-diaphragm condenser microphones, placed within centimeters of the instrument’s bells. This allowed us to capture hyper-intimate details into the samples. The library is well suited to add unpredictability and creative imperfection. The LIMINAL range is not specifically intended for fast passages or soaring melodies. Instead, you may see the libraries as collections of naturalistic pads – offering humanistic details not found in something derived from a synthetic source.

The user-interface allows articulations to be layered, mixed and reversed. The ‘crossfade gizmo’ allows artful blending of sound layers with intuitive color-coded controls. LFO controls can also be enabled, allowing your DAW’s tempo to dictate the modulation of an individual layer’s volume. This opens the door for tempo-synced swells and unleashes even more creative possibilities for evolving texture.
