Quality Microphone Selection

Microphone choice and placement have a huge impact on the quality of a recording. Audio engineers around the world rely on the sound quality and tonality of standards like the U87 and 4006 microphones. The B&K (now DPA) 4006 microphone is used on classical recordings for its realistic, linear sound. The signal path sampled by the Concert Grand represents the best possible value, from microphone to preamplifier to converter. This is a bold statement, but it rings true in the Concert Grand's sound. When using multiple microphones and a few notes of polyphony, the 96k delivers clean, clear audio, contributing to high-definition sound quality.

The iconic New York Hotel

The Concert Grand was sampled from a 9-foot New York Steinway Model D built after 2010. The difference between the new and older Model Ds can be heard in the action, hammering, and overall tone. This is undoubtedly a majestic piano, with all the signature sounds you'd expect from this model. The tone isn't as sharp or piercing as some Japanese models, but it's still very expressive. Pianos have an inherent mechanical noise, which contributes to their authentic sound. We haven't masked imperfections. All the controls an audio engineer must have to create a finished recording are available in software, right at your fingertips!

Custom presets

Concert Grand has some amazing presets to get you started playing and enjoying the library right from the start! These presets have been carefully crafted to sound great in a variety of styles and take advantage of the 9 microphone options.

The Ambisonics section also includes presets covering a wide range of virtual microphone positions. The sonic palette you can achieve from ambisonics alone makes the Concert Grand worth the price of admission! There are traditional stereo microphone perspectives like XY and Blumlein, as well as creative mic placements for adding depth to the sound of a room. There's a lot to explore with ambisonics within Kontakt, but there's even more to explore when the ambisonics section is used in a DAW like Pro Tools or Logic.

The reverb section contains 29 impulse responses, each with the correct amount of pre-delay. Plate, hall, and studio reverbs are available to enhance piano performances. Each microphone perspective has its own reverb send, allowing you to shape the sound based on the microphone you're using. Many instrument presets use the built-in reverb.
