The legendary VOX Continental organ is faithfully recreated in software as the VOX Super Continental!
Originally conceived in the early 1960s as a more portable and affordable alternative to the tonewheel organ, the VOX Continental's distinctive sound and its distinctive red and black design quickly became a staple of British Invasion bands. The Continental's bright tone and gruff attitude perfectly complemented jangly guitars and cut through the mix with ease on stage and in the studio.
Production ceased around 1970, but a new generation of ska, garage, punk, and new wave bands adopted these instruments throughout the '70s and '80s. After decades of use, and years of wear and tear, these instruments, initially unstable, often become charmingly out of tune. As the key contacts age, each note begins to sound slightly different. With this unique sound, combining electric and vintage character, the Vox Continental became a fixture on stage and in the studio—particularly in the independent music scene.
The KORG Collection VOX Super Continental is a meticulous recreation of several Continental keyboards, including beloved instruments personally owned by the principal software engineer, in order to best represent the sonic performance of the Super Continental. This analysis includes details such as the behavior of hundreds of individual key contacts, resulting in the most accurate VOX Continental software instrument available anywhere!
Calibration Characters
The VOX Continental's oscillator is based on astable germanium transistors. The octave divider circuit means the octave is always pure, but all other intervals can be at least subtly detuned (and often more). This creates a unique chorus effect when playing chords and adds a touch of extra flavor to melodies.
A single note is produced by combining the overtones of the drawbars. Each key has up to five key contact wires, one for each drawbar. When each wire hits its drawbar bus, the overtone produces a sound (often accompanied by a slight noise). The contact points often wear and misalign over time, so the wires hit the drawbar bus at slightly different times. This gives each note a unique character, both on the note itself and across the note.
All of these imperfections are carefully modeled, and calibrated controls let you dial in more or less as needed.
Refined user experience
Smooth sound transitions let you naturally continue playing previously played sounds and effects as you change sounds. KORG's sophisticated sound browser supports categories, text searches, and more. On-screen help provides information and helpful hints for every drawbar, knob, and switch.
Effect
The VOX Super Continental is almost always played through an amplifier, so of course we've included a selection of amp and cabinet models, as well as a stunningly detailed rotary speaker. There are two insert effects before the amp, another after it, and finally a dedicated reverb slot. For inserts, you can choose from 30 effect types, ranging from vintage pedals and tape delays to modern reverse delays and shimmering reverbs.
